Rural Development Programme England (RDPE)

North Pennine Dales LEADER 2014-2020

North Pennine Dales LEADER has recently been awarded £2.133m via DEFRA and the Rural Development Programme for England to support projects that will contribute to rural economic growth within the area. The North Pennine Dales area covers Teesdale, Weardale, South Tynedale, rural mid Durham and rural Gateshead (Derwent Valley).

The aim of the North Pennine Dales LEADER Local Development Strategy is:

To support strong and sustainable rural economic growth throughout the North Pennine Dales area in ways which reflect the area's local priorities, engage local people and business, build more resilient communities and conserve its high quality landscape and environment.

Activity will be delivered against the local identified priorities of:

  • Rural Business
  • Farming and Forestry
  • Rural Tourism, Culture and Heritage
  • Rural Services

The LEADER programme will be delivered via a Local Action Group (LAG) made up of representatives from within the area.Representatives need to have local knowledge and an understanding of issues communities face within rural life.

Durham Coast and Lowlands LEADER 2014-2020

£1,584m has been approved for the Durham Coast and Lowlands LEADER programme via DEFRA and the Rural Development Programme for England to support projects that will contribute to rural economic growth within the area. The programme will cover the majority of East Durham stretching down to the southern border of County Durham. Please see map Durham Coast and Lowland LEADER map (PDF, 5Mb).

The Durham Coast and Lowlands Local Development Strategy (LDS) has identified the following local objectives against which activity will need to be delivered:

  • To support significant economic development within the area, by increasing the opportunity for sustainable employment.
  • To build stronger, more resilient communities by supporting self-sufficiency and encouraging local actions to address local needs.
  • To develop a sustainable tourism culture that invites visitors to share our unique landscape and culture, maximising assets and investing in the infrastructure that underpins the offer.

The LEADER programme will be delivered via a Local Action Group (LAG) made up of representatives from within the area. Representatives need to have local knowledge and an understanding of issues communities face within rural life.
