About the Partnership

Working Groups

Economic Regeneration

Bringing together key partners from across the County, the Economic Regeneration Working Group seeks to promote the ‘Place’ agenda through physical regeneration activity. Leading the sustainable revitalisation of the County’s towns and settlements, this group aims to maximise the impact of physical improvements through considering and effectively co-ordinating with other investment strands that impact the economic regeneration agenda.
Broadly the key responsibilities of the group include:
  • Leading the sustainable revitalisation of the County’s towns and settlements
  • Raising the environmental quality and image of the County’s towns and settlements and as part of this to ensure due consideration of the contribution of public art and cultural based activities.
  • Ensuring a linkage is achieved between investment in physical developments and the opportunities available to support business development (including social enterprise opportunities), skills development, employment generation, community cohesion and capacity building.
  • Performance managing Single Programme projects that fall under the remit of the Group
  • Considering the potential impact of new developments, policy priorities, research findings and other evidence
Issues currently being considered by the group relate to the promotion of a major centres renaissance programme with particular emphasis on Durham City, Bishop Auckland and Seaham. Attention is also being given to the relationship between housing market renewal in targeted communities and the development of a sub regional housing strategy, as well as the developing City Region Agenda.

The group is chaired by Richard Prisk, Director of Regeneration & Development, at the District of Easington. Secretariat support for the group is provided by Victoria Catesby, who can be contacted through the contact us page.

Durham Sub-Regional Housing Strategy

The Durham Housing and Neighbourhoods Group represents a partnership of the County’s strategic housing authorities, the County Council, the Primary Care Trust, housing associations and other stakeholders. This group developed the Durham Housing Strategy 2008-11. The strategy aims to ensure that County Durham has a, ‘strong and supportive housing market’. The aims of this strategy closely align with the County Durham Economic Partnership’s focus on promoting the economic development and regeneration of the County.

The aims of the Housing Strategy are:

  • Regeneration and rejuvenation of the Housing Market
  • Deliver quality and choice of housing
  • Improvement and maintenance of existing housing
  • Meeting specific social and community needs
Setting the strategic direction for the group the document indicates how working in partnership this group will add value and begins to deliver more affordable housing of the right quality to bridge the gap between house price level and what people on lower incomes can afford to buy or rent.
